Introduction
Take a look at yourself or those around you as you read this.

Chances are more than likely that you are in a posture that is less than ideal. Try just sitting a little taller; did you have to move much?

Everyday our bodies are exposed to gravity bearing down on us, add to this some of the poor postures we adopt and no wonder our backs and necks start to hurt.

All around us we hear people complaining of aches and pain especially at work. If you're reading this, it's probably because you too are suffering.

The good thing is that you have a choice; continue as you are or be pro-active and make a change!

CITYBACKS is physiotherapy led posture awareness and management workshop aimed at the office based work-force.

We provide education, motivation and practical solutions to posture related pain and its prevention. This is achieved through a two hour, small group interactive workshop carried out at your place of work.

Our aim:

  • make you aware of your current postural behaviour
  • help you identify problematic activities
  • provide you with information, ideas and solutions
  • help put you back in control for life

This programme is designed to empower you to make a conscious change in your postural behaviour. By doing this, you help reduce the stress on your body and therefore decrease the risk of pain and dysfunction.

The knowledge and skills you gain will enable you to make a difference immediately.

About Us
CITYBACKS was established in response to the realisation that many of the clients seen at physio in the city are unaware of their postural behaviour and the impact it is having on their lives.

Postural dysfunction not only impacts clients when at work but directly relates to their social and sporting activities.

The Citybacks workshop is run by Greg Savides, a Chartered Physiotherapist at Physio in the City based in the City of London. Much of his time is spent assessing and rehabilitating clients with work related pain and postural dysfunction.

Having trained in South Africa where he focussed on back and sports related injuries, he has spent the past 4 years in London. It is here that he has developed a professional interest in work and posture related pain. He constantly strives to rehabilitate his clients to help them avoid recurrence of these very preventable conditions. It is his belief that more needs to be done to educate the office based workforce on how to better manage themselves throughout the day.

Citybacks workshop is a postural awareness and management programme which compliments ergonomic equipment and good health and safety practices.

Corporate Information

80 % of the population will suffer back pain.

In 2003/04 employees suffering neck and arm pain took on average 18.3 days off work as a result of their condition.

Those suffering back complaints averaged 18.7 days off.

Employers spend considerable sums of money in providing ergonomic furniture and equipment to ensure the wellbeing of their staff. We recognise this as a positive step, however we believe it is also important to invest in the employees ergonomic skills and knowledge. Unfortunately no matter how good the chair, if one does not sit effectively, it is of little benefit.

We understand that time spent away from the office due to ill-health affects all aspects of business. From the cost to employer and breakdown of business, to the lowering of team morale and loss of self esteem and earnings of the employee.

It is important for all concerned to be involved in the health and wellbeing of the business partnership.

The employer has a certain duty of care towards it's employees but we also believe that the employee should be pro-active in supporting this function.

Our programme will help facilitate this partnership through providing the employee with insight and skills to care for themselves and thereby reduce the risk of injury. The responsibility is shifted towards the individual who ultimately would prefer to be healthy and pain free.

Postural Dysfunction
Picture a set of scales: On one side is positive postural behaviour, on the other are the negative daily habits and stresses. When the scales are evenly balanced we are hopefully living a pain free life. However, too much negative behaviour and the scales will tip towards dysfunction and pain. To correct this we have to increase the amount of positive behaviour and reduce the poor.

There are no short cuts in dealing with work related pain. There is no magical "on/off " switch. Changes need to be made to all aspects of life in order to correct the dysfunction. These changes then have to be applied frequently to maintain the improvement.

Education is the key to postural rehabilitation.

Many of the clients seen at physiotherapy have good ergonomic equipment, many have had workspace assessments but very few have had any training in how to take care of themselves.

It is by understanding the body and the stresses placed upon it that allows us to make positive changes in behaviour and thought. We have to alter our unconscious poor habits and through conscious awareness ensure we adopt better behaviour.
